The East Anglia regions capital, Norwich has a reputation as a safe, friendly and culturally thriving city. Norwich has just about everything to suit all lifestyles within walking distance, preserving historic heritage spanning over 1000 years and boasting exciting contemporary culture.
The most complete medieval city in the UK, it has an 11th-Century Cathedral and a Norman Castle, which is now home to Norwich Castle Museum and Art Gallery. The city preserves many charming medieval streets and lanes including cobble-stoned Elm Hill, which has provided a location for films and TV dramas. Flying Classrooms is based in the heart of this historic centre, facing Norwich Cathedral.
Short-listed for the UK City of Culture 2013, Norwich is also known for a diverse, lively cultural scene, with excellent cinemas, theatres, museums and live music venues. The city has a busy multicultural events calendar, which includes international festivals. The Forum, containing the Norfolk Millennium Library, hosts a variety of public events and exhibitions year-round.
There are facilities in Norwich for all types of sport, from swimming and lawn tennis to dancing and dry skiing. The surrounding Norfolk Broads have facilities for water sports such as kayaking and windsurfing. Norwich is home to Norwich City Football Club, nicknamed 'The Canaries'. The city benefits from many green areas where you can picnic, cycle or a take a pleasant stroll. There is a wide variety of nightlife, from traditional English pubs to fashionable bars and nightclubs.
One of the top 10 places to shop in the UK, Norwich offers many attractive independent shops alongside major department stores and high street chains. Shopping highlights include the Royal Arcade, built in 1899, and the largest open-air market in the UK. Norwich has an abundance of quality restaurants and cafés catering to all tastes.
Norwich is a gateway to the famous Norfolk Broads, a large network of rivers and lakes, where you can enjoy boat trips and water sports. In Norfolk there are many magnificent stately homes to visit, including Sandringham House (the Queen's retreat and the birthplace of Princess Diana). Only a short train ride away, the Norfolk coast features a number of beautiful sandy beaches and pretty seaside towns.
Norwich International Airport is only 15 minutes drive from the city centre, giving easy access to worldwide locations via Amsterdam. Norwich is less than 2 hours from London and only 1 hour from Cambridge by direct train. Norfolk has an efficient bus and train network, making local towns and villages accessible by public transport.
